Woman attacked by bobcat in Hillsborough | News

Riverview, Florida -- Officials say a woman was attacked by an injured bobcat Thursday morning.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says it happened on Highway 301 in the Riverview area. The woman encountered the bobcat along the side of the road and called FWC for assistance. 

She was reportedly told not to get near the animal, but she threw a towel over it to try and pick it up, and that's when the bobcat attacked and bit her.

There's no word yet on the extent of the woman's injuries.

The bobcat was taken in the custody of Hillsborough Animal Services. Veterinarians there determined the animal's injuries -- believed to be caused by a vehicle -- were more serious than originally thought, and it had to be euthanized.

The animal's remains will be tested for rabies.

Animal Services reminds people that injured animals will often try to defend themselves when they are injured, and they can respond aggressively when approached.
