New online library catalog means big changes!

Riverview, Florida  - After nearly a year of preparation, the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative will launch a new online library catalog, Polaris, on April 29.

Officials say the system will enhance the Cooperative's management of library resources, reduce costs, boost productivity, and is expected to improve customer satisfaction.

The migration to the new system begins today, April 8 and is expected to last through April 29.

Polaris will offer the following enhancements and tools for library customers:

Tampa, Fla., Feb. 4, 2013 – Sea Monsters Revealed, an exhibition of the world’s largest plastinated sea creatures, made its world premiere debut at the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) on Saturday, March 9.

“MOSI is thrilled to host the world premiere of Sea Monsters Revealed. We believe that it will set a new standard for traveling exhibitions and has the potential to match the tremendous impact created by the world premiere of Bodies… The Exhibition,” said MOSI President Wit Ostrenko.

Ruskin, Florida -- Adults in the Ruskin area are invited to enjoy a closer look at the moon and planets with astronomy enthusiast, Craig MacDougal in the Community Room of the SouthShore Regional Library.

MacDougal will lead a brief discussion on stars, planets, and moons. Immediately following the discussion will be an outside viewing of the night sky through a telescope.

The event is from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 PM on Tuesday, March 19th at the SouthShore Regional Library at 15816 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin.

Hillsborough County Seeks sponsors for Hack-A-Thon

Hillsborough County, Florida-- The first Hillsborough Hack-A-Thon  is set for next month, and county reps say they're seeking businesses with an interest in "becoming champions for innovation" to sponsor the event. 

The Hack-A-Thon will take place at the HCC Campus in Brandon on the weekend of April 12 - 14. Sponsorships will cover the necessary costs of advertisement, event space, prizes, food for the participants and other event-related expenses.

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.

Register now for second high school teachers workshop

Tampa Bay, Florida -- All Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate high school teachers from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Manatee and Sarasota counties are invited to participate in a one-day workshop at The University of Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 23, to learn how to inspire students to take their interest in chemistry outside of the classroom.

The free event will be held in the Plant Hall Music Room on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes lunch. The media is welcome to attend.

PTEC campuses host regional SkillsUSA competition this week

More than 500 students from Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties are expected to compete in the two-day SkillsUSA regional competition Feb. 6 - 7 at pTEC, Clearwater and St. Petersburg.

Students will compete in numerous categories including automotive service technology, cosmetology, welding, photography, and plumbing.
